Our fan-club included many of our teachers as well. At times, I've been surprised by the shellacking we used to receive, when some teacher did not like the very performance, other teachers had applauded. That was a fundamental lesson that I learned early on: some dislike what others like and so learn to live with it. :)

By the way, Happy Children's Day.

"Ordinary men and women are not usually heroic. I was late for mass, this evening. First Reading was already over and the responsorial psalm was on. As usual, I was perusing the missal reading from my iPhone. The usher, who was a few feet away, came closer with a stern susurrus: Sir, could you please turn off your phone?

I looked into his eye and spoke with a gentle susurration: But, am following the Missal on my iPhone.

Not expecting that, he seemed to be taken aback by his presumptuous judgment. He then left with a softer susurrus: Oh OK.. am sorry.

It is true, many are not that concerned about social etiquette, when it comes to using cellphones in public. So, this gentleman could have presumed that to be the case here.

However, he was wrong in his judgment.

This simple incident did not annoy or irritate me. Rather, it made me contemplate. It made me question myself, what would I have done in a similar circumstance, with the roles being reversed.

Human foibles make us more -- not less -- human!

Their innocence and pristine thoughts are a thing of beauty.

Today, my 6-year old daughter narrated a story to me.
But, the Embassy of India in Washington DC, did come to the rescue of my friend yesterday, within just a few hours.

My friend -- an Indian citizen -- completely forgot to notice that his Indian passport had expired, on his way to the airport on Friday. He could not board the flight and just sent his son and wife to India, while staying back to renew his passport at the Indian Embassy in Washington DC.

On Monday, July 30th, he went to the Embassy of India in Massachusetts Ave in Washington DC. The Consular staff not only got his Passport renewed within a few hours on the same day, but, seemed to be very sympathetic and understanding of his plight.

While he was very concerned as to how long the whole affair would take, the Indian Embassy not only helped him, but, certainly played a Good Samaritan role as he left to India today, July 31st!

While I had been slightly critical on some of the bollix-ups before, I will be certainly remiss, if I fail to acknowledge this wonderful example of administrative efficiency on the part of the Indian Embassy in the Nation's capital.

Kudos, Embassy of India for putting a smile into one of your compatriot's family.Rex Arulhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05489015133353658105noreply@blogger.com0Metro Atlanta (null)33.8629 -84.556558tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7097785.post-44535597255004825292012-07-01T14:02:00.000-04:002012-07-01T14:02:18.490-04:00Truth is still the truth - Mahatma Gandhi

Ever afraid of speaking the truth and being the lone person to stick out your neck? Ever been bullied and sullied? I am sure, this quote from Mahatma Gandhi should dispel any such fears or dilemmas. Truth IS and WILL always be truth, no matter what. What an awesome quote! Just prior to dismissal, two people shared their joy: one was a young woman with a head without a single strand of hair due to cancer and a young man battling his addiction.

So what is heroic about them?

I do not want to belabor on the topic, but, think of rising up before a crowd of 300, boldly acknowledging your suffering, weakness, and shame, without any fear!

Especially, that young man, who pointed to his companion and said, since her entry into his life, he was able to battle all his addictions successfully!

I wish both of them the very best, for their valor, humbleness, and poverty of spirit.Rex Arulhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05489015133353658105noreply@blogger.com0Smyrna Smyrna33.858459 -84.518036tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7097785.post-31274178077162153182012-06-17T15:23:00.001-04:002012-06-17T15:24:54.082-04:00Bane of Tamil TV Serial Culture

However, I am concerned the way he bulldozes concerns by pushing arguments for nuclear energy by merely saying how much Energy it can bring. Sure, none of those villagers, who are protesting are going to oppose the notion of brining in additional 1,000 mW generation per day from each reactor in Kudankulam. They are genuinely concerned about safety and their future. This is now a concern in other developed nations too. Some of the parallels drawn by Mr. APJ to dismiss those concerns are ersatz at best and not helping to dispel doubts in the minds of those people who are on a fast to scrap the project.

What I also found too condescending and deeply regrettable was the feedback from some readers. A majority of them think as though those villagers, who are worried about their future are gullible masses, who know nothing! Many are advising that Tamil translations of the article be provided to them. That's the elitist view that is going to precisely turn those people off.

As Engineers and Scientists, I feel we are not good at Public-Relations. To understand the public's concern and to treat them with utmost respect, by dispelling wrongful notions with abject scientific truths, while remaining brutally honest to our neutral elements of Science, is our calling. When we wear elitist hats, we just turn those people off. We really need to work hard at conveying scientific truths to the general population, without being seen as having a hidden agenda.

That is easier said than accomplished. But, there lies an opportunity that is larger than generating power through nuclear energy!

Within the prescribed limit, I have dropped by $0.02 in the comments section in The Hindu.

"As an Energy Consultant,I am a cautious supporter of Nuclear Energy. While Dr.Kalam's article is edifying, it is disconcerting for several reasons:

1. He is obsessed with economic prosperity while flippant about real nuclear threats.

2. He chastises fearmongering with images of mushroom-clouds of the A-Bomb, while he fearmongers by insinuating foreign nations trying to subjugate India's energy ascendancy! Truth is nations like France & US are eager to earn India's huge nuclear-pie!

3. His cavalier attitude to nuclear safety is evident by equating a realistic threat of a cataclysmic nuclear event with his conjured folklore of first-flight accidents!

4. His deafening silence on terrorist-threats on nuclear plants is chilling, when India is on the seismic belt of terrorism.

5. Equating Japan's ER system to India's is an overstretch.

6. He's stoic on India's huge population density.

7. His dismissive attitude implies he thinks those who have concerns are Luddites. He is not right."

Here is the Op-Ed: http://www.thehindu.com/opinion/op-ed/article2601471.ece

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, please understand that a power-starved state of Tamil Nadu and its populace crave for power to get out of the draconian power-cuts that have become the norm. So, they too support efforts to add more nuclear power generation methods to the overall mix. However, please don't tout that alone to floccinaucinihilipilificate their valid concerns!
Originally blogged by me at http://randzoom.posterous.com/added-my-comments-to-thehindu-on-drapjs-op-ed at RandZoom.
Rex Arulhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05489015133353658105noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7097785.post-23699370790560909912011-11-06T18:27:00.002-05:002011-11-06T18:42:10.532-05:00Why would @WSJ / @IndiaRealTime presume Sivakasi to be in China?
